Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of energy consumption and economic development on CO₂ emissions in Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia during the period 1990-2020. The results show that energy consumption in the industrial and transportation sectors is the primary contributor to increased CO₂ emissions. In contrast, the commercial and residential sectors tend to reduce emissions. Vietnam is most affected by transportation, Thailand by population growth and industrial production, while Malaysia is influenced mainly by energy use in agriculture and commerce. Based on these findings, the study proposes several policy implications, including: prioritizing energy reform in high-emission sectors such as industry and transport; promoting energy efficiency in commerce and households; enhancing regional cooperation on energy transition; and designing country-specific strategies based on national socio-economic contexts.
