The portraits of female leaders from employees’ perceptions: A study in manufacturing sectors

Abstract

The present study employs the qualitative approach and in-depth interviews (as the method to collect data) with employees in manufacturing sectors, under the supervision of female leaders. The result from interviews with 19 respondents working with middle and first-line managers shows the current picture of female leaders and the expectations of effective ones. Data from in-depth interviews is analyzed by thematic analysis. The research findings identify two aspects, which are performed by female leaders, including: (i) Characters and personalities, and (ii) Leading competencies. Besides some expectations echoing with previous studies, such as female leaders need to balance work and family, or female leaders need to show team performance better. There are some expectations, which are never found in the previous studies, such as appearance, dress, or skills in personnel management, or updating technical knowledge. Based on the discussion, managerial implications are proposed for firms to prepare for developing female leaders in the future.
