Abstract

The paper investigates the macroeconomic resilience of the Vietnamese economy against external shocks. The research combines qualitative analysis, using a literature review to shed light on the current economy, with quantitative analysis, using a time-series sample of Vietnam in 1990-2021. The results record that the Vietnam economy can absorb external shocks with a quite rapid recovery and stable economic growth over time. The external shocks are strong however, and usually cause changes in the growth orbit and are associated with undermining of potential macroeconomic stability. Therefore, the public policy architecture needs to improve macroeconomic resilience to translate external shocks into the macroeconomic stability in the coming years.
